Ebbw ran out as comfortable winners of this tight, hard fought and physical quarter final at Bargoed Park, but it was far from easy! Bargoed took the lead with a Calum Jones penalty on their first excursion into Ebbw territory. Dai Langdon’s boot enabled Ebbw to catch and then pass the hosts, who were enjoying some scrummage dominance at times but coming off second best on the gain line. It was 9-3 at half time.
As the penalty count increased against Bargoed, Ebbw eschewed shots at goal and went for the line out drive. It was successful and Dai Jones claimed the try. At 14-3 down, Bargoed decided to run at Ebbw, but a pass was picked off by James Lewis who ran in from 60m. Langdon converted. 5 minutes later, Lewis again snaffled a Bargoed pass but this time decided to pass to the supporting Toby Fricker who cantered over in the corner. At 26-3, Ebbw had the game sewn up and, although Bargoed threw everything into the last 10 minutes, the Steelmen’s defence was superb and Bargoed found no way through.
